About Mangalam Estate

Sibsagar district, Upper Assam · est. 1973

118 hectares on the alluvial flood plain near the Brahmaputra. Hot, humid, and low-lying, on rich silt the river has laid down over centuries. These are greenhouse conditions. They push the bush hard, and they give Assam its body.

ProductionOrthodox, worked for tip rather than volume: well-sorted twisted leaf with a high proportion of golden bud, and in the monsoon a Silver Needles made from unopened buds alone. The orthodox lots are graded and sold on their own account rather than blended away.
